Designing Your eBook Cover

copyright protected - Gisele Veilleux

I have no doubt that everyone has a story to tell, and an experience to share.  If you’re timid about writing, considering testing the waters  by writing children’s books.

Some examples may be:

· your dog or cat

· your first date

· your first prom

· your first job

· your first car

· how you felt when you didn’t make the cut on the football team, etc.

Our children desperately need mentors.  By writing a children’s book, and sharing on one of your life experiences, your contribution could be profound.

Not sure how?

I suggest that you start by reading “Writing Your Life” by Lou Willett Stanek, PH.D., author of “So You Want to Write a Novel”.

I Need an eBook Cover

Because I was on a  ridiculously tight budget, I was on my own.  I had absolutely no software to design my own cover, and I am not a graphic artist by trade, but I followed my heart and knew what I wanted.  Using three different software products, I managed to design my own eBook cover—and it wasn’t that hard!

Remember, software does not solve problems; people do.

However, a true graphic designer will charge you between $250—$500 to design your book’s cover.  I highly recommend that you work with a graphic designer, if you can afford it.

Update:

After much research, I decided to upload my eBook to LuLu.com, and allow them to publish my book.  I had to completely redesign my cover (front and back) and found that I was quite happy with the templates and options they had to chose from.  I realize this may not be the case for all authors, but it worked for me.

There is no technology that can make you a great writer.

Technology itself changes too quickly for any busy person to keep up with.

Software doesn’t solve your challenges… people do.

Books are written by story tellers.

Story tellers are people.

If the human factor is not lost, any book can find its audience and be enjoyed.

eBook Writing Help

You must wear many hats to be a first time author, especially if you’re in a tight budget.  You may find that you need eBook Support.

Here are a list of questions you should ask yourself:

How do you plan on marketing your eBook?  How much do you know about website construction and search engine optimization?  Are you prepared to comply with resellers submission?  Will you be able to submit your eBook to Amazon by reformatting your book using their Mobilpocket eBook Creator?  Can you convert your book to other eBook Formats?  Can you graphically design your eBook’s cover, or do you know someone who can?  How good are you at editing?  Will you need a ghost writer?  Is your eBook a technical manual or a how-to book of some sort?  Do you have any technical writing experience?  Can you convert your eBook to PDF?.

eBook Cover Case Study

Jack Krohn, owner of Safety First, a self-defense products company decided to use LuLu.com to self-publish his work.  With some creativity and patience on my part, I searched the templates available on LuLu and found some very attractive and affordable options for all four of his eBooks.

Justice From Within:

At first glance, the original cover (shown left) needed to be redesigned.  Once we decided on the book’s new title, I scoured for the right photo to use on the book’s cover.  The new cover (shown right) was not only inexpensive but effective in achieving our goal.
